Opis baze podatakaPomoću Indeksa ljudskog razvoja (HDI) moguća su merenja i prikazi stepena razvoja jedne države u odnosu na sledeće kriterijume: dug i zdrav život, znanje (mereno prema pismenosti) i pristojan životni standard. Cilj kreiranja ovog indeksa izražen je u stavu da je za adekvatnu ocenu stepena razvoja države, pored ekonomskog rasta, neophodno uvažiti i položaj, šanse i mogućnosti građana.
